DEFENSIVE DRIVING
Traffic accidents claim the lives of over 30,000 people each year. By definition, accidents don’t happen intentionally. Certainly, accidents will happen, but there are things that you can do intentionally which can prevent many of them. Let’s discuss some of the actions you can take to prevent accidents right now.
You may have heard the expression “the best defense is a good offense.” This saying does not apply to safe driving. Driving defensively is one of the best things you can do to avoid accidents. Slow down and heed the speed limit. Constantly keep tabs on the vehicles around you. Learn to anticipate what other drivers might do, so you can be prepared if one of them suddenly slows down, changes lanes, or cuts you off. Drive within the limits of your abilities.
Whether you’ve been driving for days or decades, you need to pay attention to the mechanics of driving every time you get behind the wheel. Always check for traffic before entering an intersection — look to the left, then to the right, and then check the left side again before proceeding. You should double-check for traffic approaching from the left because you will cross their lane first as you pull out. When you are changing lanes, start by turning on your signal; then check your mirrors and make sure that you look over your shoulder to check for vehicles in your blind spot. Scan the horizon, pay attention to traffic on either side of you, and check your mirrors frequently — every ten seconds is a good rule of thumb.
Plan ahead. If you know the route you will be taking, you can pay more attention to the road and not have to worry about the map. Make sure that there is a designated driver who will not be drinking any alcohol. Remember those 30,000 fatalities? Alcohol is involved in nearly fifty percent of all fatal accidents — so don’t drink and drive. Wear your seat belt, and make sure that everyone else in your vehicle does the same. Your chances of surviving an accident increase by fifty percent when you wear your seatbelt.
Make sure you play an active role in your safety whenever you’re behind the wheel. Drive defensively, and don’t let the stupidity of others cause you to lose your cool. Stay alert. Give your full attention to your responsibilities as a driver. Drive safely!
