HOUSEKEEPING
We’ve all laughed at the comedy routine on television in which the man slips on a banana peel, or watched a cartoon character land on its head after running across a bunch of marbles on the floor. In reality, though, people don’t generally “bounce back” unharmed from slips, trips, and falls.
A great number of hazards are produced on a jobsite: the building supplies you plan to use, the leftover pieces, the packing materials, the tools, the fasteners, the cords, and the hoses. If the workplace isn’t kept clean and orderly, you may find yourself stumbling or tripping over tools, equipment, or debris left lying around the work area; a clean job is a safe job. You can save yourself some pain, and avoid the amused looks of your co-workers, by ensuring that the jobsite is clean and safe.
Here are some things you can do each day:
ü Dispose of packing materials such as boxes, pallets, cardboard, and strapping material promptly. Pick up waste material and scraps of lumber, steel, re-bar, pipe, etc.
ü Remove or bend over nails protruding from scrap lumber and formwork.
ü Keep stairways, passageways, and gangways free of materials, supplies, and obstructions at all times.
ü Store flammable materials properly, and in approved containers.
ü Clean up spills promptly, especially grease and oil; or at least rope off the area until it can be cleaned up.
ü Pick up loose objects you see lying around that might present a tripping hazard.
ü Put lunch scraps, paper cups, soda cans, etc. in proper containers.
ü Empty trash containers on a regular basis.
Good housekeeping starts the first day on the job and doesn’t end until the owner takes possession. Do your part and set a good example. Keep your work area picked up and orderly. Report any problems or concerns to your supervisor.
And last, but not least, watch out for those banana peels!
